Abstract

The academic and professional background of the man who initiated and developed training programmes for speech therapists and audiologists in South Africa is presented. The manner in which he developed the profession,  and pioneered work in phonetics and linguistics is described, including P. de Villiers Pienaar's role in educational, academic, clinical and cultural institutions in South Africa.
